Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Summary Below is a quote about the unique situation of Vietnam Soldiers doing thier tours of duty as individuals - the rationale that Rob gave for his title ALONE IN VIETNAM: "The singular experience of Vietnam combat veterans illustrates how traumatic changes can be difficult for the mind to incorporate and how this "working through" process is essential. The Vietnam War was like no other in American history. The average age of the combat soldier was nineteen, not twenty-six as in World War II. The military flew soldiers into duty as individuals, not as teams. Once there, nothing seemed straightforward. Those already fighting did not readily accept arriving soldiers. The enemy was not easily identifiable or necessarily in uniform; women and children could kill you in the streets. Women and children civilians were therefore sometimes killed by U.S. soldiers. There was no "front line," and soldiers had to win the same territory over and over again. Leadership was young and inexperienced. The object was to kill as many people as possible and survive.

marine in da nangFNG syndrome In his book Rob referred to the new recruits coming in to squads of experienced (combat hardened) soldiers as "green seeds". As a green seed, or FNG, himself, he described some of the distant hardened soldiers as the "undead zombies".

The Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.

The Vietnam Center and Archive In May 1989, a group of Vietnam veterans from West Texas gathered at Texas Tech University to discuss what they might do, in a positive way, about their experiences in Vietnam. That group's immediate decision was to form a Vietnam Archive and begin collecting and preserving materials relating to the American Vietnam experience. The Vietnam Center and Archive - Texas Tech University - collects and preserves documentary information about the Vietnam War, and supports and encourages research and education regarding all aspects of the American Vietnam Experience. Searchable digital materials archives, online exhibits, history projects, oral histories, photos… the site is endles! The Center and Archive also has a facebook page.
